Hi everyone,
Just to make you aware that as part of our Learn Together
time we are going to visit St. Michael’s House in Baldoyle over the coming
weeks.
St Michael’s house is a school that caters for children with
a range of significant physical and learning difficulties. (www.smh.ie) As part of their active week they have
invited us to play games with some of their pupils.
We will be making two trips to the school. The first trip
will be on Monday the 9th of May. This will be an opportunity for
the children to meet each other and learn a bit about each other. We will then
spend time that week planning and practising games that we can play with the
children. We will return on the 18th of May to play the games.
The cost of the bus for Monday the 9th of May is
5euro per child. Can they please bring this in by Friday (6th May).
I am trying to liaise with the community bus for the trip on the 18th
but if this isn’t available I will have to ask for a further 5euro that week.
If anyone is available and would like to join us on either of the trips let me
know. We will be going at 10.45 both days.
Thanks,
Denise

Homework Term 3
Hi everyone,
Welcome back. Hope you all had a nice break.
Homework is changing slightly this term. I have explained this to the class but here is a layout of what it will look like for the next few weeks.
English
Spellings will continue to be stuck in their homework copy. Children to learn these nightly. They do not have to put these into sentences anymore.
Reading- Each Monday the children will get a comprehension from The Green Genie. They will get differentiated Comprehensions Tues-Thurs.
Writing- Written homework on a Monday and a Tuesday will be based on their reading from the Green Genie. They will answer these questions in their homework copy. Please remind them to continue to present this carefully. They will have written homework from their handwriting book later in the week.
Maths
Word Problems- For the month of April the class will be getting 10 word problems per week. We will correct them together on a Friday. Encourage them to use their copy/rough work to work out the answer.
Tables- We are now revising all tables and will continue to use Tables Champion to do this. Please remember this is the last term that they will formally learn addition and subtraction tables so it is important to do these nightly.
Maths word- As we did last term we will learn new maths words weekly. Laminated sheet in homework folder
Irish
Reading- Each week the class will get 2 pieces of Irish reading. Here is a link to a website if you wish to hear the audio. http://www.cjfallon.ie/ Click into parent/student resources. Irish Spellings will resume next week when they children are used of the reading homework.
I will continue to give Planet Maths on some nights also as we work through new topics in Maths.
We will be doing one final project also later in the term. More details to follow.
Thanks,
Denise.

Homework tips
Homework in 2nd class should take about 30 minutes. It is important that children are sitting at a desk for this, without many distractions.
No homework I give is new content, the children have seen the spellings/words/tables etc already that day/week so the homework task is to help them consolidate this learning. At this stage they should be able to complete all written tasks independently, you shouldn't have to sit with them. Your role should only be to check over it with them at the end. If they are getting distracted during writing it can be helpful to set a timer/stopwatch and challenge them to complete writing tasks within a certain time.
Expectations for homework
Handwriting in homework copy should be as neat as possible. The page should be ruled with a red pen, dated and each sentence numbered. Encourage your child to expand their sentences as much as possible. If the work is 'dog', all children are capable of writing more than 'I have a dog'. Challenge them to maybe put an adjective in the sentence etc.
Spellings- Practise at least 2 spellings per night. It isn't possible to learn all spellings on a Thursday. The look, say, cover, write, check method is useful for many children.
Reading- The children should be reading aloud nightly. After reading please discuss what they have read with them. This could simply be 2-3 questions about characters/what they think will happen next.
Reading should be encouraged outside of regular homework time. It doesn't have to be novels, many of the children enjoy reading fact books, science books, sport books etc.
Maths- Tables should be practised nightly. Lots of links on blog to help with this.
Gaeilge- Spellings should be practised nightly.
If you would like to learn Irish with your child-https://www.duolingo.com/
This website helps your pronounce Irish words- http://www.abair.tcd.ie/?lang=eng (Dingle Dialect is what the children are most familiar with)
As always, if you feel your child can be challenged further I have many links to Numeracy, Literacy and S.E.S.E sites on this blog.

Term 2- Project
S.E.S.E Project- Term 2
This week we began learning about the 1960’s. Each child has
some pictures of people/things from the 1960’s in their scrapbook.
For their project I would like each child to research an
aspect/event/person linked to the 1960’s.
Here are some suggestions but if they want to do something
else that’s perfect too.
·
Music.
·
Sport.
·
School in the 1960’s compared to school now.
·
Transport in the 1960’s compared to Transport
now.
·
Inventions from the 1960’s.
·
Life in Dublin in the 1960’s compared to life
now.
·
Famous person from the 1960’s.
Things to remember when doing your project:
·
Present your work neatly.
·
Don’t copy and paste information. Put
information into your own words.
·
Include pictures/drawings/cut outs etc,
especially if you are comparing and contrasting the 1960’s with now.
·
Be familiar with the information in your project
as you will be presenting it to your class.
Children have their scrapbooks in their bag and can begin
their project whenever they want. Projects are due for the 8th of
February.
Thanks,
Denise
