Maths Dictionary

Here is a link to a useful website I found. It is a maths dictionary. It has lots of definitions of maths terms and diagrams and games that explore them further. Many of the words are from the 3rd-6th class curriculum but many of the words your child will be familiar with already. This gives them the opportunity to explore these further.

2D shapes .

In Maths this week we are learning about 2D shapes.
The shapes we learn to name in 2nd class are ; squares, rectangles, triangles, circles, ovals and semi-circles. We must recognise how many sides and corners each one has.
We are also working on identifying them in our environment.
Here is a quick game to help with this.

Some children have no highlighted words on their list. This means they were able to read them all. Please encourage them to use this as a reference when they are writing sentences for homework at home so that they are spellings the dolch words correctly.

Denise.

2nd class Maths.

Hi Everyone,

I know there were some confused faces when we were explaining this concept last night so I found a few links for you to refer to.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BvsEbrWV00E

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akCX13BO05A

We will be doing a lot of build up to this so it will be a while before you see them coming home doing the end process.

Regarding Maths, I can't emphasise enough the importance of practising their tables nightly. Please refer to the tables label on the blog for online games.

Maths in second class is very practical. To support this you could do some of the following-
Ask them the time (We are learning quarter past and quarter to)
Can they tell you the date it is by looking at a calendar?

Money- Get them to pay for items in the shop. Can they count the change?

Weight/Capacity- Ask them to read the capacity or weight of items when you are shopping. Can they recognise which item is lighter/Heavier in your shopping trolley by looking at the label?

Shapes- can they identify shapes in their environment?

If you are still confused about the subtraction please ask.

Denise :)

Dictionary work at home.

Hi,

We have started using an English dictionary in class. Each child keeps it in their folder. We are practising finding difficult words in the dictionary and discussing what they mean. It is a little tricky but we are improving each week.
To help us get better at this skill here are some online games

http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/digger/5_7entry/3.shtml

http://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/ks1/literacy/alphabetical_order/play/

https://kids.wordsmyth.net/we/

As well as online games you could encourage your child to look up the meaning of difficult words they find in their novel/reader.
They could keep a notebook of new words. This is a nice activity to do daily or a few times a week. It is also good for handwriting practice. He/she can write the word, definition, and an original sentence using the word in her/his notebook. An illustration would also make a nice addition.

S.E.S.E Project

Hi Everyone,

Over the next two weeks we are going to be learning about The Rugby World Cup in many of our subjects. As part of this I have given each student a country to research.

·         World Religions

·         Physical Features e.g. rivers, mountains

·         Famous people

I will be giving them their scrapbook over the coming days. I would like that they use a minimum of 3 pages in their scrapbook. If they want to use more that’s no problem. We will be presenting them on the 5th of October.

Here is a list of the country each student has.

Kayleigh-Wales                                                                                    Joshua and Daniel- Japan

Reading-2nd class

Hello everyone,

Welcome back again.
I have started sending home graded readers for homework.
I will change these each Monday.
All the class put huge effort into their reading last year and some of the class will be able to read the books with ease. As well as reading the book all children should be able to;

- retell the story in their own words.
-identify main characters, setting, main events etc.
- answer a range of questions based on the text.
-explain the meaning of difficult words.
-put difficult words into sentences to show they understand meaning.

To supplement reading further the children are welcome to bring novels home from the school library. Books by authors such as Roald Dahl and Dick King Smith are very popular with the class. If you feel your child would benefit from doing this please encourage them to do so.

Thanks,

Denise.

Maths- Word Problems/ Problem Solving

Here are some links to help consolidate learning around word problems/Problem solving.

The children enjoy seeing their own name in word problems also so they may wish to write/solve their own problems.

Remember the have a list of maths words in their folder. It is important that they are confident and recognising these words and understand them as these words are common in word problems.

Term 2 Project

Term 2 Project

In SESE (History, Geography, Science) so far this term we have covered a number of topics.

·         The Solar System.

·         Signs of Spring.

·         Animals that hibernate.

·         Weather.

·         Windmills.

·         The National Costume of Different countries(We looked at Belarus, Nigeria and Peru- However they may pick any country.)

I would like each child to pick a project based on one of the above topics. As they have already done a project in first class I am going to let them decide how they would like to present it (They can use their scrap book, an a3 page like last time or make something linked to their theme etc)

Your child has until March 16th to complete the mini-project. We will then begin to present them in class. I have gone through this in class but please can you remind them of the following:

Clear title

Accurate content (Doesn’t have to be too long. I would prefer a short piece that the children really know rather than loads of information that they are unsure of.)

Originality i.e. not copied word for word from book or internet.

Presentation (Can be handwritten or typed)

Pictures (can be printed, drawn or cut from magazine/newspaper etc)

Correct spelling and grammar (capital letters and full stops)

The children really enjoyed the projects we did in October and enjoyed seeing how their peers approached and presented their projects. I was delighted with how enthusiastic each child was about the last project so I hope they enjoy this as much.

Thanks for your help.

Enjoy,

Denise.
